Ford Endeavour Overview
Since 2003, Ford Endeavour has been one of the most popular SUVs in the Indian market. There have been several changes during this over a decade and half period with the last generation model launched back in 2016 being the crucial one. It has now grown up from a pure Sports Utility Vehicle to one of the most tech-loaded vehicles in this price range. With the advent of new rivals including Skoda Kodiaq and Mahindra Alturas G4 in this time period, it was necessary to bring a more sophisticated model of the last version. And Ford did it well as the new 2019 model now comes with styling tweaks at the outside and subtle changes inside to enhance the comfort levels. Ford Endeavour Exterior & Look
The new update has made the Endeavour bigger and muscular which perfectly follows the old school SUV trait. The dimensions have slightly changed with the front bumper adding 11mm to the overall length and the side steps adding about 9mm to the width. But what remains unchanged is the pure American charm which perfectly contrasts the uptight design of the immediate rival Fortuner. There are no sharp lines and no super sleek headlights as seen in the Fortuner, you get the same bulbous body panels for which the car is known for.
Besides new and clean front bumper, the grille has also been revised a bit. Come to the side and the new Fortuner shows the same plus-size looks. Although the wheel size remains the same 18-inch, the design is new with dual-tone theme and diamond cut shape. At the back, the SUV gets no updates except the LED tail lights becoming the part of standard package.
Rest of the exterior package remain the same with features including HID projector headlights, chrome door handles, HID projector headlamps and bulky skid plates. Sadly, the car doesn’t retain the headlamp washer functionality which was omitted during the series of silent upgrade the car went through all these years.
Ford Endeavour Interior & Space
It’s more or less the same. So, the quality of plastics, the fit and finish, the look and feel, and the operability of switches, buttons and knobs, all feel decently upmarket. There’s no change to the interior design either and the facelift carries over the same dash, centre console, steering, aircon vents, and instrumentation.
What has changed though is the multimedia screen. The new Endeavour uses Sync 3 and it employs a bigger screen. The resolution is good, the touch response is immediate, and sound quality for the system is outstanding. In terms of features, all the prerequisites are there. It gets various media inputs; there’s Apple Carplay and Android Auto; there’s in-built navigation; and it doubles up as the reversing camera screen as well.
Other features in this Titanium Plus include three-zone climate control system, semi parking assist, a panoramic sunroof, electric fold for the last row of seats, keyless entry and start, hands-free boot opening and closing, and power adjustment for both the front seats. There’s no shortage of safety kit either – there’s ABS, ESP, parking sensors at the front and back, auto headlamps and wipers, and seven airbags.
What’s more, the Endeavour’s cabin remains a quiet and comfortable one. There’s noise cancellation, courtesy smart speakers; the seats all round are large, cushy and supportive and there’s ample space. Besides that, with the powered tail gate and split and fold for the second and third rows of seats, there’s plenty of flexibility that comes as standard on the Endeavour.
What we would have liked better though is the look and feel of plastic at places. It’s on the ball almost everywhere, but the flat black plastic around the gear shifter looks tacky. Also, the start/stop button could have had a higher sense of occasion to it.
Ford Endeavour Engine & Gearbox
The engine powering the Endeavour made big headlines when it was launched and why wouldn’t it? All of 3.2 litres with five cylinders and almost 200bhp and a mammoth 470Nm of torque available from just 1750 rpm meant it was the most powerful SUV not just in its own segment but also a segment above. The other option is the 2.2-litre diesel which makes 158bhp and 885Nm of torque. While the 3.2 gets 4WD and a six-speed AT, the 2.2 is rear wheel drive only and gets a six-speed auto and a six-speed manual.
We however only drove the bigger 3.2 and realised why we loved it so much. Tap the throttle and one can immediately feel the vast reserves of torque available. Cruising steadily once on the move, the Endeavour feels eerily silent, but when you do bury the throttle, the big SUV gets down on its haunches and whooshes forward. I say whooshes because that’s the kind of sound the engine makes as the rev counter starts climbing higher. The Endy does not like to be hurried up and makes it apparent with the loud engine noises and the buzzing accelerator pedal. In fact its best enjoyed by riding that huge mountain of torque in a relaxed manner. Driving on the roads of Jaisalmer, the roads were mostly good tarmac and the Endy eats miles with aplomb. Even the odd sweeping corners are dispatched with ease, with the bug SUV feeling extremely confident. Sure it’s not as agile as a hatchback, but for an almost 2400 kg SUV, the Endy belies its weight and girth. While it munches the good sections, it simply pummels the bad sections into submission. The Endeavour is so well set up that it just glides over the horrible sections. It’s only when you miss spotting a speed breaker that the Endy is found bucking about.
Ford Endeavour Ride & Handling
Being a burly SUV, it is more than capable of ironing out road imperfections with absolute ease when it comes to being thrashed around. However, since the car underpins the old-school ladder frame chassis, you will continue to experience slight bounces from the suspension while hitting sharp thuds. This is particularly more noticeable in the second row especially if there are two or more passengers occupying the seats. The steering feedback remains top notch as before. It can be even compared to some hatchbacks while driving at city speeds and weighing upright as the speed increases. And since it’s an SUV, it will behave like that only. What it means is that while you can have fun throwing this car at corners, you will also experience plenty of body roll at the same time. The steering response does instil confidence while taking sharp turns, but since it’s a body on frame SUV, it is not recommended to push this car like a sedan.For off-roading, there is plenty of ground clearance (225mm) and Ford Terrain Response system which offers Normal, Snow, Grass, Mud, Sand & Rock mode with the last one engaging with the 4×4 low range.
Ford Endeavour Safety & Security
The carmaker hasn’t skimped on any of the safety aspects. The SUV gets disc brakes on all the wheels which are more than enough to do a predictable job of halting the car quickly.
