Honda Jazz Overview
Honda first rolled out the Jazz hatchback in the year 2009 and then revived it in 2015 in a bid to give something new in the premium hatch segment. Since its revival in 2015, it didn’t get any updates until Honda recently decided to give it a minor facelift. The 2018 version of the Jazz has been given subtle changes with the outside getting same silhouette and same features as the older version. The new 2018 Honda Jazz on the inside gets some additional features over the pre-facelift model while it remains practical as before. The mechanical also remain identical. Honda Jazz Exterior & Style
In terms of design, the Jazz is the classic Honda profile. Steeply raked A-pillar, short stubby bonnet with sharply sloping slab, cabin mid-forward position and the wheels set at the extremities of the car are all features that can make one identify it to be a Honda even if the badge is hidden. The car is now just shy of the magic 4 metres length and compared to the previous model, the new Jazz is 55mm longer and its wheelbase is 30mm more. Surprisingly though, the new model looks more compact than the predecessor.
The design concept is called ‘Bullet’ by Honda and the other dimensions of the new Jazz remain the same as the predecessor’s. Viewed from the side, the new Jazz is similarly strikingly Honda with its gradually rising shoulder line and a deep cut waistline that ends at the tail-lamp, and curves down to form the haunches very much like in the Mobilio’s design. The rear features large tail-lamps and a tail-gate that cuts deep into the rear fender offering a low loading height into the boot. Scoops cut out from the front and rear fenders give the Jazz an aggressive new stance. Chrome elements are prominent in the two-layered bonnet grille with the metal strip and at the rear where the chrome garnish visually enhances the width of the car.
The new Jazz’s paint job is excellent and it now has a signature orange body colour. We personally liked the Carnelion Red that also sits so well on the Honda City. 15-inch alloys fill out the wheel arches well. Luggage capacity is 354 litres and can be expanded by folding down rear seats. The rear seats backrest can also be inclined by about 5 degrees to allow back-benchers a more relaxed seating position. Six-footers will find that the roof is also tall enough to give them comfy accommodation unlike a few other hatches.
Honda Jazz Interior & Space
Step inside and you will find familiar environment as the car is quite identical to sibling City save a few details such as instrument cluster and storage spaces. The cabin is as flexible as the old one with the driver seat getting height adjustment functionality. Unlike the previous version, this time Honda has removed the magic seats in the Jazz. The feature was a practical option for many of the users as they get flipped individually, fold as well as could go completely flat to make massive space for storing luggage. This was the big USP of the earlier Jazz but the reason Honda removing this feature is not known.
However, the updated version gets several new features such as new push engine start/stop button and cruise control which were long demanded by the folks. The car also get new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit which the carmaker call as Digipad 2.0. Powered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the unit can be used for music as well as navigation, voice command and Bluetooth streaming. It also displays feeds from the rear parking camera. The 354L of boot space is still massive and best in its class even giving tight noose competition to some of the compact sedans out there. The car still remain practical on several aspects, there is front centre armrest with storage and parcel shelf at the rear. Ingress and egress is absolutely comfortable especially for the elder ones in the family. The seats in the car at both front and the rear are wide and comfortable while the black upholstery on the top of the range variant looks youthful. It would not get dirty easily as there is beige seat fabric given in the lower variants. The legroom is more than what one would expect in such a car and the same goes for headroom as well. The ergonomics are perfect in this car with everything falling into hands so easily. The leather-wrapped steering offers excellent grip and while there is rake adjustment for it, there is no option for reach adjustment.
The instrument cluster is also not too different from what we see in the City sedan. The dials in the instrument are clear and easy to read and you would love the way how graphical bar moves with a light foot. The unit also shows real-time fuel efficiency and also the ambient cluster lights glows green or blue according to the driving style i.e. blue if you are not drive sensibly and green if you are. The multi-information display also gives information on outside temperature display, cruising range, fuel consumption warning/distance to empty and shift position indicator. And like all the other Hondas out there, this one also illuminates during the day as well.
There are some new goodies in the list including one push start/stop button with white & red illumination and cruise control. Other comfort factors in the updated Jazz remain intact with features such as electrically adjustable/foldable ORVM, auto up/down driver window, front and rear power windows and automatic ac with touchscreen control panel. The rear ac vents is still missing in the car, a feature which is being offered in cars like Hyundai Santro. Also, a USB charging point is a big miss in a car with a price range of Rs. 7.44 – 9.41 lakh.
Honda Jazz Engine & Gearbox
The new Jazz is being offered with a petrol and a diesel engine option. The petrol engine is the 1.2-litre i-VTEC generating 90PS of peak power and 110Nm of peak torque. This engine is paired with either the 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT (continuously variable transmission) gearbox. The engine is the predictably refined petrol powertrain from Honda with the manual gearbox offering slick, short shifts. The CVT is as much a delight use, thanks to the steering-mounted paddle shifters that are being offered by Honda, finally. So, even if you find the eco-conscious CVT a bit too slow to kick down and help you with the overtake manoeuvre, you can now take control, blip the paddles and go down the gears and go on.
The diesel engine on offer is the 1.5-litre i-DTEC in the same state of tune and with the same 6-speed manual gearbox as is currently on offer in the Honda City. Generating 100PS of peak power and 200Nm of peak torque, this engine is quite a gem in terms of how tractable it is and the amount of low end torque available from as low as 1,400rpm makes it very useable in city driving conditions. It was a bit noisy in the City’s cabin and it continues to be so in the Jazz too. But the clatter of the diesel engine and general noise levels are very much tolerable at low rpms. It is only past the 2,500 rpm levels that the noise starts intruding.
Both the engines offer adequate power and torque, the lag in delivery is there, but is fairly short before the car pulls ahead clean. Gear stick shift quality is great, though a bit prominent and ‘notchy’.
Honda Jazz follows the traits of City and comes with both the diesel and petrol engine options. The diesel powered Jazz is good for producing ARAI certified 27.3kms for a litre fuel, making it the most fuel efficient premium diesel hatchback, falling just behind the Maruti Baleno. However, the real world figures might be around 20kmpl in mix conditions. On the other hand, the petrol powered Jazz can deliver 18.2kmpl while the CVT automatic petrol can return the mileage figures of 19kmpl. Honda Jazz Ride & Handling
The new generation Jazz sits on a highly improved suspension setup. The car offers excellent ride quality especially at slow and medium speeds while crashing into the potholes is no more a concern. The changes that you will notice in the facelift Jazz hatchback are subtle, but the changes inevitably make the hatchback much better equipped so that it could face its new rivals easily.
