Tata Nexon Overview
Tata Motors is a household name which we are all familiar with not exactly for their passenger’s cars but for their array of commercial vehicles which ply on our Indian roads. However, the entire scenario changed since the year 2014 when our homegrown auto manufacturer decided to introduce their new generation lineup for the Indian market. In that particular year, Tata Motors also showcased a sub-4 meter SUV concept at the 2014 Auto Expo which looked futuristic and way ahead of its time. Later we came to know Tata Motors received a lot of enquiries about the particular concept car which encouraged them to give a green signal to the project.
Move ahead to the year 2016 Auto Expo where we saw an almost production ready Nexon concept which looked futuristic and promised to bring with it an array of new features to this segment. The SUV was spotted being tested a couple of times on the Indian road and other various conditions. We also got to see a glimpse of the production variant of the Nexon at the 2017 Geneva Motor show. Tata Motors has also confirmed that they will be launching the much awaited Nexon sub-4 meter SUV towards the month of September. Tata Nexon in Tryaldrive
The sub-4 meter SUV is a direct rival to the popular Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Ford Ecosport. Initially, we thought that it would be launched only with a diesel engine under its hood, but now we have received the confirmation that Tata Nexon will be available with both diesel and petrol engines which also give it a slight edge over its rival the Vitara Brezza.
Tata Nexon Design & style
While there have been no updates to the exteriors of the Nexon, the unique design continues to attract fans. So you still get the striking butch stance with a sweeping roof-line, a pronounced crease along the profile, and the flared wheel arches that hold those large alloys with fat rubber. The unique bit is that Tata Motors offers consumers an opportunity to go online and use their ‘Imaginator’ feature to customise their Nexon. It comes with loads loads ofof options that can be selected, plus there’s alsobesides the added convenience of paying and tracking the delivery of your favouriteNexononline.
Tata Nexon Cabin & Comfort
The dashboard of the Tata Nexon is designed keeping practicality and ease-of-use in mind. The steering wheel feels good to hold and comes with controls for audio and phone. The centre console gets a floating 6.5-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto. You get other features like climate control, 8-speakers for the Harman Sound System, voice commands, 2 airbags and rear AC vents. A lot of parts on the inside have been borrowed from other Tata cars. The Nexon also gets a wearable key which can be useful when you go for jogs.
The AC is excellent and even at blower speed 1, the throw of the air is extremely good. The doors open wide and the seats are set at a height, allowing easy ingress and egress. The front seats feel comfortable with good support for the lower back and under thigh. At the rear, it might get a bit difficult to fit 3 people, but nonetheless, both knee room and head space are very good. The front windows are large but the rear windows are set high up and there is no quarter panel, thus making short passengers feel claustrophobic. The cabin is also very practical with a number of storage spaces, including one in the centre console that has been inspired by premium cars. The boot is well-shaped and you can fold the rear seats flat to get a cargo capacity of 690-litres. Quality on the inside is good for most part but certain areas feel a bit cheap.
Tata Nexon Engine & Gearbox
The petrol variant gets the 1.2 Litre, three cylinder engine which is the same unit which also powers the Tiago and Tigor. But, the engine has been worked upon to make it more responsive and also to churn out slightly more power. The turbocharged unit is capable of churning out a healthy power and torque figures of 110hp and 170Nm respectively. The diesel variant, on the other hand, gets the new 1.5-litre four cylinder direct injection turbo unit which is capable of producing about 110 Ps of peak power and 260 Nm of torque. Both the engines paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox which is also new for this segment. However, there are rumours that Tata Motors might also introduce an AMT transmission as well soon.
For the first time, Tata Motors is also offering three different drive modes as well for both petrol and diesel variants. The three different drive modes on offer are Eco, City and Sport. While the City moe allows the owner to zip through City traffic, the Eco mode calms things down and focuses on returning impressive overall fuel efficiency. For those who want a spirited driving experience can always opt for the Sport mode.
Tata Nexon Driving Dynamics
In the ride and handling front, not much has changed despite being slightly heavier by about 20-40kg. On the whole, the petrol and diesel Nexon with AMT gearboxes behave similarly to manual transmission versions. Ride quality continues to be a strong point since it drives over the majority of our roads with a relatively flat ride overall. But that said, the petrol versions still benefit from better handling when compared to the diesels, owing to the lighter weight it has to haul around.
Tata Nexon Safety & Security
Tata Motors is offering dual front airbags and ABS with EBD on all variants. You also get a seat belt height adjuster standard on the Nexon. We all are pretty much familiar with the sales and service of the automaker. Sales outlets across the country are aplenty and service centres are also in abundance. While service quality levels may not be the best, Tata isn’t that bad either and the company is working their way up.
