Jaguar XE Overview
When an individual wants to announce their arrival, one of the first step is to buy a luxury car. Considering they have just started making a fortune, it is the entry level luxury sedans which they look at. The volumes make this segment very attractive for all the luxury brands. Now, it is Jaguar who have understood that this segment needs to be catered to and catered well. This has led to the introduction of the Jaguar XE, the entry level sedan from the British marquee. Jaguar XE Exterior
At the glimpse of the XE, the first impression we get is of the new XJ. The honeycomb mesh grille comes with the red growling cat and sharp headlamps. The fascia of the XE holds some similarity in design to the other Jags. The headlamp LED layout is new and this is carried forward on the upcoming Jags. Design by Ian Callum and his team, the XE has perfect sculpted proportions, with a long bonnet and the boot size is in proportion with the sloping roofline. The rear haunch is muscular indicating that the power is delivered through the rear wheels. The side profile is typical Jag, and the design DNA is carried forward. The rear styling is identical to other Jags and the tail lamp design has been inspired from the legendary E-Type. The XE comes with 17-inch tyres, our press demonstrator had Pirelli. The XE has been built on the new iQ [Al] platform. This is an all aluminium platform and Al stands for Aluminium. This will be used to make the new XF, XJ and even the F-PACE. The new-gen vehicles are lighter due to the use of aluminium. This gives XE an advantage in its segment.
Jaguar XE Interior
Like the other XEs, the weak link in the package is the rear bench. The seat itself is really comfortable but legroom and headroom are at a premium so you just can’t stretch out like you can in its rivals. Really, the best seat in the house is the one behind the steering wheel. Do note, the XE is one of those cars where the trim level you opt for dictates how much you’ll like the cabin. Base Pure and mid-spec Prestige versions as the model tested get rather drab all-black interiors, while the fully-loaded Portfolio trim’s dual-tone combo is far more premium in appearance. Opt for a lower trim and other items you’ll have to compromise on are the infotainment screen (smaller touchscreen) and sound system, aside from a few comfort features.
Jaguar XE Gearbox
The Jaguar XE has been launched with just a petrol engine in India for now. The two trim levels get different tune and we had the higher tune variant. The 2.0-litre Ford sourced engine produces 237 BHP of power and 340 Nm of torque. The figures translate into excellent performance which is further assisted by the brilliant 8-speed ZF gearbox. The gearshifts are extremely smooth and most of the times, one wouldn’t even realise when the gear changes. When using paddles, the gearbox holds the revs and doesn’t upshift automatically on hitting the redline. This lets the driver have a lot of fun in ghat sections.
The Jaguar XE gets four driving modes – Eco, Normal, Dynamic and Winter. The character of the car is very different in the four. The Eco mode dulls the throttle response and the gearbox upshifts very quickly to maximise fuel efficiency. The Normal mode is the best balance of power and comfort with the steering being reasonably light. The Dynamic mode is best reserved for those occasions when you are in the mood for a bit of fun. The Winter mode is particularly useful in snow conditions and it makes the car start of in 2nd gear to control the power transmitted to the rear wheels.
Jaguar XE Driving
It’s actually the 320d that the XE 20d can be best clubbed together. Both cars are designed to put the driver at the heart of the action. And like its petrol siblings, the XE diesel succeeds in this quest, and how. The steering is straight up incredible and there is a very natural balance in the chassis that makes the XE a joy to drive on curvy roads. Yup, we can’t wait to bring it head-to-head with a Bimmer either. Ride quality, again like the petrols, is really good too. There is a great balance between body movement arresting firmness and ride-enhancing suppleness in the suspension setup, and only on occasion will the XE thud and thump on our roads.
The Jaguar XE got the highest safety rating, 5 star in the Euro NCAP test. It comes with the usual package of safety features which are more or less standard across the segment. The lightweight aluminium structure of the car is supported by high strength steel in impact areas which gives solidity to the car. The sales and service network of Jaguar is limited when compared to the German trio but they are expanding steadily. Yes, the current Jaguar owners haven’t been happy with the service quality but the Tata owned brand is committed towards customer satisfaction.

Jaguar XE Conclusion
The XE retains the Jaguar DNA be it for looks and styling, interior, power and agility. The only knick in the armour is no option for diesel engines as majority of the luxury car sales in India are for oil burner. Leaving that, we loved the XE. With this brand, you don’t just move away from the German badge but you even procure a fresh product that looks a lot more expensive than its price tag.
