BMW X1 Style
One of the previous gen BMW X1’s biggest shortcomings was that it simply didn’t look the part of a rugged SUV. But that’s in the past because the new car looks like it belongs to the X family and it appears tough and imposing despite being the youngest sibling. The new X1 has a handsome face with smart wraparound lamps that taper towards a large kidney grille. The trademark twin corona ring lamps ensure the X1 will never be mistaken for anything but a BMW. Full LED headlamps with a cornering function are now standard. The side cuts a similar profile to the BMW X3 but appears a little lower (it’s actually 53mm taller than the old X1) and this gives it a sporty effect. The rear end has twin pipes and a well executed pair of LED lamps that taper in a similar fashion to the headlamps. There’s a also a neatly integrated spoiler that has a smart back trim along the sides.
This car is in the top M Sport trim which means it gets more aggressive bumpers, and black treatment around the windows and on the roof rails. The rear bumper gets a smart looking gloss grey trim but we wonder how this will stand up to attack from road debris and stone chips. The good news is the that the M Sport trim has the same 165mm ground clearance as the other trims. There’s also a cool M style key fob and lovely 18-inch M branded wheels.
BMW X1 Space
Looking at the generous dimensions of the vehicle on the outside, I was a bit surprised when I opened the door to step into the driver’s seat. The cabin feels compact and even the dashboard and centre console seem to have a compact layout. Just like any other BMW, ergonomics are spot on and the dash is very driver centric. Materials used all over feel very upmarket and premium but when you drive this X1 back to back with any other car from the same stable, say the 3-Series, that is when you realise how superior the other car feels.
There are lesser number of buttons on the steering wheel, centre console, etc. and even though you do get a lot of features, the X1 does make you feel evident that yes it is one of the cheapest BMWs around. Even the round knob that is used to control the infotainment system is smaller in size. I found the front seats very comfortable and finding that perfect driving position is super easy thanks to the electric seat controls. The driving position itself feels much like that of a crossover and if you’re expecting a proper SUV-like driving position that feels commanding, then you’ll be disappointed.
The rear seats are comfortable too and space is better than the old X1. You also get a basic centre armrest at the rear. The best part about the new X1 is the large windows that BMW has endowed and it makes the cabin feel very airy and lends a positive vibe. Gone is the claustrophobic feel that you get in cars with smaller glass areas. If you’re buying a car for Rs. 40 odd lakhs you expect it to have a ton of fancy gizmos (a la Skoda Superb or Ford Endeavour) but BMW is known to skip a lot of features from the standard equipment list and the X1 is no different. It misses out on vital stuff like a parking camera. It doesn’t even have cruise control.
BMW X1 Engine
A bit about the mechanicals first. For now, the X1 is available only in diesel form and uses BMW’s latest 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine. Peak power is an impressive 187bhp and max torque is a strong 40.7kgm. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard fit, but buyers have the option to choose between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, the two obviously available at different price points. In normal driving conditions, the xDrive system powers the front wheels, but when needed, it can send 100 percent of the torque to the rear axle. So how does it all come together?
The engine’s alert from 1,500rpm on, has got a strong mid-range and will even rev happily to 5,000rpm with the gearbox in manual mode. There’s great access to power and you really won’t be left wanting for more anywhere in the rev range. Of course, the engine feels its liveliest best in Sport, but Comfort is quick too. As with all modern BMWs, the quick-shifting gearbox deserves praise here. It really does bring the best out of the engine.
Being in the driver’s seat of a BMW naturally gives you a lot of extra confidence because you know by default that the car will have its dynamics nicely sorted. The same thing happened when I took a corner at a speed I can’t mention here unless I want my mom to make me resign from my job. While our dear editor Faisal held on for life with both his hands on the ceiling grab bars, the X1 attacked the corner perfectly well maintaining it’s line. Sure, there was some screeching and the TCS light went crazy, the Bimmer stayed composed and never did it throw tantrums. Ride quality isn’t the best though and while it soaks up minor bumps very easily, the more nastier potholes do manage filter in the cabin at low speeds. At high speeds, the story is completely different and the X1 stays firm. The tyres have splendid levels of grip which we found out during our handling and braking tests.
BMW X1 Safety
The BMW X1 comes with multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP and other safety features that one expects in a luxury vehicle. The BMW X1 offers all the features that one will need for the price paid.The BMW X1 is well specced across the models but the M Sport gets some exclusive features. Let’s start with what all the variants get – LED headlamps with cornering function, rain sensing wipers and auto headlamps, dual zone climate control, an auto-dimming inside rear view mirrors, push button start and auto start-stop. Safety is a priority and all variants get six airbags, ABS and a comprehensive stability control package. Now onto the stuff only the top M model has – leather seats, the larger iDrive screen with a touch-sensitive controller, HUD and of course, the M Sport visual goodies. Strangely, this is another expensive German car that doesn’t offer the very practical feature of keyless entry found on run-of-the-mill Rs-7-lakh hatchbacks.

BMW X1 Conclussion
The new BMW X1 is quite the package, especially when you see it in light of the old one. Performance from the diesel engine is really impressive too, the ride quality is good and importantly the X1 is an SUV you’d love to drive yourself. Agreed, this X1 isn’t quite as engaging to drive as the old one was, but in the bigger picture, this is a more versatile and a more complete X1, and that’s the reason to like it. What makes it more likeable still is the way BMW has priced it. Prices start at Rs 29.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and top-off at Rs 39.9 lakh. Which compare well with the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. For the money, this just could be the best small luxury SUV you could buy.
